UDAAN

Background
The UDAAN accelerated education program aims to improve out-of-school girls’ access to education. The model provides an intensive and high-quality condensed 11-month curriculum, including leadership and life skills for adolescent girls aged 10-14, and helps them to successfully transition into formal public schools. Likewise, the model also engages with parents, communities, schools, and government structures to transform the social and gender norms and practices that impede girls’ equitable access to education. The program also aims to develop leadership, socialization, health and hygiene, and life skills, so that girls can fight against gender inequality and discrimination in the future. Additionally, the program helps to prevent child marriage by enrolling girls in school.

Working Areas
CARE Nepal started the UDAAN model in 2013 from Kapilvastu District in Lumbini Province of western Nepal. Since then, 67 UDAAN centres have been established in different municipalities of Rupandehi, Kapilvastu and Nawalparasi Districts and are run through local partners like Siddhartha Social Development Center (SSDC), Sunshine Social Development Organization (SSDO), Unity for Sustainable Community Development (USCD), Siddartha Samudayik Samaj (SSS) and Backwardness Eradication Society (BES Nepal).
