CARE Nepal is providing immediate relief support
to the victims of floods through a large-scale relief operation
in the eastern Terai region of Nepal. Altogether 25 districts
were affected across the country, of which the five eastern Terai
districts of Sarlahi, Mahottari, Dhanusa, Siraha and Saptari are
the worst hit. These are also the districts where CARE Nepal is
currently implementing a number of projects, including Nepal Family
Health Program, Churia Watershed Management Project, Churia Area
Program and SAGUN Irrigation Program. The damage caused by flash
floods in these districts is the worst in recent memory, and has
washed away thousand of hectares of fertile farmland, claimed
many lives and rendered thousands of families homeless.
Given CARE Nepal’s heavy involvement in these
districts through its various projects, programs and partners,
CARE Nepal was approached by the local communities and authorities
to extend support to the victims of the floods. During the end
of July CARE Nepal had extended immediate relief materials (i.e.
food items, cooking utensils, clothing, materials for temporary
shelter and some basic medical supplies) to 5,950 households whose
houses have been completely destroyed.
During its immidiated relief support, the relief
materials worth NRs. 8,330,000 (eight million three hundred and
thirty thousands only) was handed over to District Chapters of
Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), in coordination with District
Disaster Relief Committee (DDRC). CARE Nepal had also mobilized
its local NGO partners, CBOs, including Water User Associations
for the distribution and monitoring of relief materials.
After the immidiate relief support, CARE Nepal
carried out post relief operation in these districts. The activity
for the post-flood rehabilitation support included support in
terms of house construction, distribution of agriculture seeds
and tube-wells installations, riverbank repair, access to clean
drinking water in the affected areas.
Activities
CARE Nepal, in partnership with NRCS and in coordination
with the DDRC plans is conducting the following activities in
the five Terai districts:
a) Provide agriculture seeds (wheat, lentil
and vegetables) to 10,000 households to start immediate productivity
to support their livelihoods.
b) Provide support to install 500 tube wells to provide clean
drinking water to at least 6,000 households
c) Provide support for house construction materials (i.e. bamboos
and roofing materials) to at least 5,000 households.
d) Repair damaged riverbanks and dykes adjacent to affected villages. |
